The Sakaan are a reptilian, water-breathing species from the southern Perseus arm of the Milky Way Galaxy. They had an extended settlement and colony system, with advanced agriculture techniques.
Their homeworld is the 2nd planet of the Korabbas system, just at the outer edge of the habitable zone. Where other life stuggled above on land, the Sakaani thrived and evolved for millions of years underwater. For survival on other colonies, they have adapted powerful and ingenius Bio-enhancements in their struggle to expand and survive.
Sakaani society was much like any other. Tribal cultures evolved from societal need in families called clutches. The Sakaan preserve a powerful genetic memory from clutch to clutch, and often interbreed with little genetic deformity to preserve this bloodline. The Sakaan abandoned religious practices early in their history in favor of science and a collective family oriented philosophy called the Hearthpath. They are neither warlike or pacifist, and will go to war to protect their family. They are reactive in nature, often knowing and waiting for an attack before retaliating.
Sakaani advanced technologically very quickly. In a matter of 1200 years, they mastered technology advanced enough to move onto the land spread their territory. in another few hundred they mastered biological science and medicine enough to exist outside their favored environment without terraforming. In the next hundred, they spread to the neighboring planets in their system, forming basic colonies. Their presence to the intergalactic community could no longer be ignored.
Their societal empire flourished, under a council of elders chosen by their clutches to represent them to the greater Sakaani people. Agreements between other species and the Sakaan were an economic windfall. Trade flourished, especially from the vast and exotic exports from the homeworld, including the drug Kaleotephanine or, recreationally, Yellow Strand.
Yellow Strand was harmless to the Sakaani, and useful in standard operations and medical procedures. It is a powerful hallucinagen, especially to non-water breathing species. It’s ban wasn’t even a shock to the Sakaan, who immediately banned the sale of it to the galactic community. Since it made many clutches very wealthy, many families produced it and sold it illegally. Sanctions and threats were placed about them by the council only to fall on deaf ears. The clutches made rich by the sale of Yellow Strand, the Sakaan Mercantile Collective officially formed against the council, creating a great political and military divide. With little in the way of actual military, council called for help from Sentinels to help quell the brewing rebellion.
Three arrived to answer the distress. Immediately taking this as aggressive action, the Collective mobilized for war, taking desperate and harsh measures against the Sentinels and the people they were trying to protect. The consequences were disastrous.
Because of the covert tactics used by the Collective, the Sentinels were unable, and soon unwilling, to distinguish friend from foe. The pilots were trapped, pinned down and soon desperate and bitter. The resulting push left a city wide massacre, and soon the Council withdrew its request, starting to fight back against their one time allies. It was too late. The Sentinels and their pilots carved the Sakaan society in ribbons, waging a guerilla war that left billions dead.
With their society and home destroyed, the few Sakaan left fled, making clandestine plots and multi generational plans for revenge.
